CHAPTER TEN
Thirteenâs deafening brays drove them into a headlong flight. Aiden led them in the same direction they had been going. Their twisted reflections kept pace, seeming to leap from one silver-flanked machine to the next.
Kestrel ran hard on his heels, her knapsack slapping crazily against her back. She was stunned to see Miranda laughing. On the other side, Jon displayed no humor at all. Far from it. With his eyes bulging to the point that Kestrel thought they might pop out of their sockets, he looked as terrified as she felt. She was just glad she was not the only one who was frightened.
Nothing had given chase after several minutes of hard running, and Aiden slowed to a trot. Thirteenâs inhuman cry of alarm had not faded in the least.
Far ahead, Kestrel made out a pair of switchback stairs climbing up to a ledge with a yellow rail, like the one they had come to earlier. Behind the rail waited a dark, rectangular opening. The way out, Kestrel hoped.
Much faster than she anticipated, the stairs and the mouth of the corridor surged closer. They had closed to within twenty strides of the escape route, when Kestrel noticed a flicker of movement from the corner of her eye. Looking that direction, her heart leaped into her throat. A silver sphere was zipping through the air beside them. In every way, it resembled the one she dreamed about when Aiden had led her down from the mountains after her Kill.
But this sphere was real, not a fever dream. It shot ahead, made a hard turn, and came to a stop in front of them. Everyone slid to halt, their glinting long knives held ready to strike.
Between one heartbeat and the next, Thirteenâs cries cut off. The silence brought no comfort to Kestrel. Her eyes slid from the sphere to the way out. It was so close now. If they could just skirt around the sphere, they could mount the steps and flee.
âHold!â Aiden commanded, as if he had read her thoughts.
Kestrel struggled to stay put, every muscle jumping.
Aiden studied the motionless sphere for a long time, then cast her a rueful grin. âSorry I didnât believe you, Kes.â
She shook her head. âI didnât believe it. I thought it was a dream.â
âI donât want to interrupt your moment,â Jon said, glancing between them, âbut do we have a plan? Anyone?â
From the hazy memories of what the other sphere had done to her on the riverbank, Kestrel wished it had all been a dream. She remembered how this sphereâs twin had stabbed her forehead with a needle-like rod, making her lose control of her body and senses.
âWe canât let it touch us,â she said, unable to raise her voice above a tremulous whisper. âMaybe if we donât do anything threatening, itâll let us pass.â
Aiden looked doubtful.
âWe should use the firelances to blast it!â Miranda suggested.
âNo,â Jon said. âIâm with Kestrel. We should go around. If it lets us pass, good. If not, then weâll fight.
